Aromatherapy: The Meaning & Essence of It
Plants, flowers, foliage, seeds, resins and fruits... they are all lovingly extracted to give the purest form of soothing bliss possible to body, mind and spirit. This is the essence of aromatherapy, what some people would call ‘heaven on earth’, nature’s gift of bliss to us all.

The fragrant scents of nature discovered by our ancestors would become the forerunners of our modern perfume, massage blends, body lotions and essential oils. Hence, aromatherapy has and always will continue to play a vital role in our lives today.

A Short History of Aromatherapy
Beauty has empowered mankind since the dawn of Time. Our ancestors have found ways to ingrain Beauty’s essence in their everyday routines, cultural habits and sacred rites. Aromatherapy is one of those methods.

The written history of aromatherapy can be traced back to about 10,000 BC, with the first records of burning fragrant woods, leaves, needles, and tree barks or gums such as cypress and cedar. The scent that filled the air would soon birth forth the Latin word per fumum (‘perfume’ in modern English) which means ‘through smoke’. During the ancient times, our ancestors would burn aromatic herbs & spices to drive out 'evil spirits' that was ailing the people. Some of these patients were possibly suffering from mental illness, but apart from using fire and water, 'smoking' was the only other known form of treatment to deal with illness that cannot be cured with normal medicinal aid.

The Chinese were possibly the first civilization to use aromatic plants to offer incense at the temple altars & concoct potions for their patients' well-being. The Indians may have first discovered distillation methods of aromatherapy, but it was the Egyptians who gained worldwide renown for discovering an impressive range of aromatherapy advantages, such as embalming their dead and cosmetic make-up creation.

The Egyptians’ rich knowledge on perfumery and its medicinal benefits soon spread fast and was absorbed by many other civilizations, near and far. When the Egyptian Empire eventually fell into decline around 300BC, Europe rose to become the next hub of empirical medicine, where scientifically-researched healing methods were introduced. The Greeks were the first to herald more practical approaches to remedial benefits of botany. While the Egyptians believed that illness was caused by mysterious spiritual forces, Hippocrates (circa 460-377 BC) the ‘Father of Medicine’ believed that doctors should adhere to scientific explanations for the disease, and make judgments only after observing the symptoms carefully. His discovery of over 200 hundred herbs led him to give treatments that usually employ aromatic baths, massages, or recommend herbs for consumption purposes.

The Romans, Persians and Anglo-Saxons followed suit after the footsteps of the Egyptians and Greeks, each civilization contributing influential methods to aromatherapy over the course of time. As of today, we owe modern aromatherapy to French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé (1881-1950), Austrian-born biochemist Madame Marguerite Maury (1895-1968), Maury’s protegè Danièle Ryman and Englishman Robert Tisserand. It was Tisserand who wrote the very first aromatherapy book titled, 'The Art of Aromatherapy' in 1977, a book that would become an important reference for virtually every future aromatherapist for almost two decades.
